FLIGHT and CRAFT QUESTIONS

Does the "launcher" or "platform" need to be included in the 450lb limit? Yes. The 450lb limit includes the pilot and all elements of the craft whether it’s one or two pieces including a launcher.

We are considering using a slingshot type device, catapult, or other devices incorporating stored energy that is developed using human power. Is this allowed? Your craft must be entirely human-powered with no stored energy, so helium, catapults, pulleys, slingshots, batteries, etc…are not allowed at Red Bull Flugtag.

Can our craft have propellers? Propellers are allowed, but the blades must be dull. We recommend using fiberglass or a material of that kind, and the edges must be taped with duct tape to prevent sharp edges.

Can I use pedals and/or bike systems? A pedal system can be used to move the propeller, should you choose that option, but it cannot move the wheels of your craft or launcher. You’ll have to rely on your trusted teammates for that task!

Can we attach anything to the flight deck (i.e. hooks, pulleys, etc…)? Nothing can be attached to the flight deck nor can there be any sort of static launcher system.

Can we use special effects? i.e. firecrackers, smoke cans, dry ice, confetti guns, shoot balls into the crowd... No you cannot use any special effects on the flight deck.

TEAM MEMBERS and AGES

Can I have more than 5 team members? Only five team members are allowed on the flight deck at a time.

How old do you have to be to compete at Red Bull Flugtag? The pilot of your team must be 18 years or older by event day. You can however have younger team members who can perform with you on the flight deck and help build your craft, but they just cannot pilot it off the flight deck.

What if I don't have my team members yet or if they change? It is fine if your team members change or chicken out as the event gets closer. However you will want to replace them to get the maximum launching power off the flight deck.

SCORING and PRIZES

How is Red Bull Flugtag scored? Scoring at Red Bull Flugtag is based on three criteria: Creativity, Showmanship and Flight Distance. Each score represents one-third of the total. Our panel of celebrity judges rates the crafts and teams overall design, costumes and craftsmanship before the crafts hit the flight deck for the Creativity score. The distance score simply represents the number of feet flown. Showmanship is the overall impression on the judges of the team skit and launch procedure. Is it good to fly? The answer is a resounding yes, as the panel of judges loves to see a craft go the distance, which leads to an overall higher score.

How long is the skit? Each team will perform a 30 second (max) skit or dance on the flight deck to the music of their choice before launching their craft and soaring into the wild blue yonder. This skit and launch routine will decide your showmanship score which is a third of your total points, so start planning now and make it a good one!

Who are the judges at Red Bull Flugtag? Each Red Bull Flugtag event has its own, unique panel of judges consisting of local celebrities, sports stars and media personalities. There is often someone who comes from a flying background incorporated as well.
