July 31, 2004 - Today the Northwest, an area traditionally known for grunge rock and microbrews, became the playground for 25 teams and over 50,000 spectators at Red Bull Flugtag Portland.
Team 2004 X-Wing Glider flew away with the 1st place title (pilot’s lessons, or $7,500), soaring 39 feet over the Willamette River in front of Tom McCall Waterfront Park, winning the judges over with their creativity and showmanship. 2004 X-Wing Glider’s pilot, Sean Serell (the Skywalker of the team), said "I came to have fun. I didn’t expect to win. This is the cherry on top of a great day."

Accompanying Skywalker in his mission was gold bikini clad Princess Leia (Kelly Duthy) armed with her cinnamon bun-like coiffeur and The Force. Obi Won Kenobe would be proud.

Judge Art Alexakis, lead singer of Everclear and Oregon Democratic Delegate, was key in the win of 2004 X-Wing Glider, giving them a perfect score of 10. Art had no idea what he was getting into when he signed up to be a judge at Red Bull Flugtag Portland, "I thought Flugtag was some kind of political event. Now that I’m here, I can't believe the magnitude of it all. It's wild! This was really fun to be a part of."
